Benefits of Gut Healing Juice with Red Cabbage

Red Cabbage is High in Glutamine

Glutamine is an amino acid that helps rebuild the mucosal lining of the gut, healing peptic ulcers while inhibiting their formation. It’s so powerful that it can assist in improving symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Red cabbage can be used as a plant-based alternative to, or in addition to, homemade bone broth to heal the gut.

It’s Rich in Antioxidants

The deep red-purple color in red cabbage is due to its anthocyanin content. Anthocyanins are antioxidants that fight free-radical damage within the body. Red Cabbage is also high in vitamin C, over 6 times higher than green cabbage. Ginger contains one of the highest amounts of potentially cancer-fighting antioxidants in any food source thanks to gingerol, shogaol, and its other anti-inflammatory compounds.

It Improves the Gut Microbiome

Green apples, while being lower in sugar and carb content than their red counterparts, provides pectin. Pectin is a prebiotic that feeds the beneficial bacteria found in the digestive tract. Red cabbage in its raw form is full of insoluble fiber which cleans out the colon. Although juicing removes much of the insoluble fiber, the soluble fiber that remains in cabbage juice acts as a prebiotic, also feeding our good bacteria, promoting a healthy gut microbiome.

What Kind of Juicer Should I Use?

The best kind of juicer to get is a slow-masticating juicer. This type of juicer retains more nutrients within the juice because it doesn’t heat the contents while in operation.

How to Juice in Bulk for Meal Prep

Juices are best consumed freshly made when they contain the most nutrients. With that said, juicing in bulk provides time-saving benefits for busy mornings and families, as well as reducing the amount of clean-up.

Try portioning out the fresh juice in Ziploc bags. Eliminate the amount of air in the bags by dipping the filled juice bags in a large bowl of water – this will create a vacuum and remove all the air. Pat the bags dry with a towel and place them on a baking sheet. Transfer the trays to the freezer. This will allow the juice to freeze in flat layers to save on valuable space.

Simply thaw out the juice in the fridge when ready to use.

Can you Store/Freeze it?

This red cabbage gut-healing juice can be stored in the fridge and enjoyed within 3 days. Fill your glass jar or bottle to the very top to reduce the amount of air in your storage containers. This will prevent oxidation to the nutrients as much as possible.

Fresh juice can be frozen for up to 2 months. It’s best not to re-freeze the juice after thawing. After a few months in the freezer, the enzymes present will begin to break down the juice, leading to lower nutrient content and quality.
